The Ten Commandments PDF Print E-mail
Throughout my life I have heard so much about the ten commandments. I’ve heard people quote them, heard people try to quote them, saw a movie about them, and I have even heard people try to claim them for the reason of eternal life. The saddest thing about the ten commandments is the fact that most people don’t know all ten of them and they can’t tell you where to find them. All they know is that they are somewhere in the Bible. I guess that’s a good start, right?

This is the reason that I wanted them to be posted on the site. We should be able to recite them and tell people about them.

Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

This is God’s Holy Word which means that we should know it and share it. Now, some of you may be thinking that since it’s the Old Testament we shouldn’t have to worry about it. Remember this, if Jesus felt it necessary to talk about parts of the ten commandments, which He did to clarify the meaning for the Pharisees, then so should we. The necessity of telling others about the commands of God are of great importance. Why is it so important you may be asking? God has called us to teach others to observe all the things that have been commanded by Him.

Matthew 28:20, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.

In Matthew 5:17,

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Jesus makes it clear that he did not come into this world to destroy the things that God had commanded. On the contrary, He tells us that He came to fulfill. Verse 18 (For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.) goes on to tell us that not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the law until all be fulfilled. A jot is the 9th letter in the Greek alphabet pronounced “iota.” Figuratively it means a very small part of anything. A tittle is defined as the least particle . This reveals to us that God still holds His word to the utmost. His law has not diminished simply because we live 2000 years after Christ.

Understanding that, we now can see why Christ would give both a warning to those that teach against the law and praise those who follow the law.

Matthew 5:19, Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus tells the people that if you break one of these laws and drag others down by teaching them to disobey the law as well then you shall be the least in the kingdom of heaven. However, whoever takes the law seriously and teaches man to do the same, great shall he be called in the kingdom of heaven. I want to take a moment and clarify that Jesus is not saying that you will be made right in the eyes of God simply by following these laws. We do not “do” to get in God’s graces rather we “do” because of our love and adoration for God.

Ephesians 2:8-9, For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Please see the Are You Sure page for clarification on this verse.

It should be our desire to please God because of what he has done for us. This is why you see Jesus clarifying in verse 20 by saying if your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees then you can enter into Heaven.

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

How can we exceed the righteousness? The way we exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees is by following/living the law out of love and adoration in order that you can come close to God. Not to follow the law in order to brag and boast much in the way that the Pharisees did. They followed the law out of obligation not in order to honor God. Our righteousness can exceed the scribes and Pharisees by going to church because we want to know the Lord. Our righteousness can exceed the scribes and Pharisees by giving tithes and offerings because we want to see God’s kingdom here on earth grow. Our righteousness can exceed the scribes and Pharisees by sharing our faith with people regardless of what they look like or where they are from because we want to see people being saved. Our righteousness can exceed the scribes and Pharisees by spending time in our prayer closets in order to pray for others. Our righteousness can exceed the scribes and Pharisees by serving one another out of love simply because God has told us too. Finally, our righteousness can exceed the scribes and Pharisees by denying ourselves and exalting God. Take time to get to know God. We get to know Him by spending time with him through His word and through His Spirit. When we take time to memorize His Word, such as the Ten Commandments, then we will know God. When we know God our desire will be to serve Him and we will know how simply because His word is a part of us.
