Since the day that I was brought into the saving grace of Jesus Christ I have been simply enamored by God’s word. The truths that I didn’t have were revealed through the word of God. It was God’s word and His word alone that opened my eyes and helped put the things of the world into perspective. Through His word the many questions that I had were being answered one by one. One of the questions was dealing with creation and how it describes who God is. When talking about creation we can see that there are many different thoughts, theories, and ideas as to how all things came to be. In this study we will find that there is a great theological message in the book of Genesis. Not only do we see how the world was created but we also see who God is. Theology is the study of who God is. That being said we have to look to the Bible for understanding. God has revealed who is through His word. Before we get too far into the theological message that the book of Genesis contains, first we need to address the value of God’s word. So many times people put stock into theories which can never give a clear understanding as to how the world came to be. Theories are based upon thoughts. Theories are based upon ideas that man has come up with on their own. Now, this is where many people start to differ from Christians. Many people think that the scientists are intelligent enough to give a theory and because we may not hold a degree or study a particular topic as long as they have, well, that makes them superior to our thinking. Here’s the problem, the theories are just that…theories. No man was around during creation. There were no cameras, no journalists, and no eye-witnesses. The creation of the world was done before any of these educated people came to be. What is the guide that scientist use as a starting point? You see, in order to understand how we got where we are we would have to understand where we came from. What is ground zero in the understanding of creation? Is it a theory? The following is the definition of theory according to Webster‘s College Dictionary; 1. A coherent group of general propositions used as principles of explanation for a class of phenomena: Darwin’s theory of evolution . 2. A proposed explanation whose status is still conjectural. Lets look at definition number one. Notice that the definition involves a coherent group of general propositions. Well, when it comes to the creation of the world we can expect nothing less then general propositions because of the fact that no one, other then God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit were present during the creation period. These propositions are used to explain phenomena. Can we expect the finite mind to comprehend an infinite God? Are we supposed to understand things that are simply unbelievable to the human mind? (1st Corinthians 3:19, “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.”) Definition number two states that a theory is a proposed explanation. Again we see a lot of proposals and propositions but no facts. In definition two we still see that this proposal is conjectural. Conjectural is the formation or expression of an opinion or theory without sufficient evidence for proof. Again I ask, what basis are all of the theories? They are all based on speculation, assumptions, thoughts, opinion, and surmise. Getting back to the value of God’s word. God’s word is made up of what theories are not...absolutes. God’s word does not suppose or assume or give its best try. God’s word doesn’t offer propositions, proposals, or conjectures. Rather, God’s word is absolute in its entirety. His word, the Bible, is exactly who God is. This is why Jesus is referred to as the Word (God the Son). John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Bible is perfect and there is no error in it. The Bible is holy just as God is. The Bible is truth just as the Lord God is. With God there is no question where you stand because the Bible gives us an exact location where we are in relation to Him. This is only because of the word of God. Our understanding of who God is, is nothing that any person has come up with on their own. We have to remember that we know who God is because He has shown Himself to us through the Bible. Please do not think that you were smart enough to know who God is by your own intellect. Mans intellect makes God out to be an old white haired man that has angels strumming harps all around Him. (This is a small example as to what man thinks about God.) God’s word is inspired. 2nd Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God...” The word “inspired” means God breathed. This means that the words of God (Bible) are given directly from Him. God’s word is perfect. Proverbs 30:5, “Every word of God is pure...” Again, the point needs to made, God only deals with absolutes. And isn’t that better? Isn’t it better to deal with absolutes rather then theories? I don’t know about you but I want to know what I am up against rather then being kept in the dark. It takes the guess work out of most things in life. Now that we know about the absolute truths of God and His perfect, errorless, and holy word we can begin to look at these theories that can be abolished through the Bible. Lets look at some of these theories. Atheism, is where people do not believe in God at all. To them the world just came to be. How? How did the world just come into existence? Nothing in this world that we know has ever just happened. Lets take something modern like a computer. If I were to ask where a computer came from you would have to respond by saying someone built it. Is that true? The answer, yes. Somewhere, someone, years ago came up with the idea to build a computer. The same is true with cars, airplanes, and high rise buildings just to give a few examples. Every one of those things had a creator. Just because I never met Henry Ford or the Wright brothers doesn’t mean that they didn’t exist. The same is true with God. Just because we didn’t see him create the universe or talk with Him about His plans doesn’t mean that He doesn’t exist. What about theistic evolutionists? They are the people that believe in God but do not acknowledge him in creation. In other words they think that God just sat back and let things happen by chance. When we look at this thought about the creation of the world we have to be concerned. First, if we were okay with this it would show that God really didn’t have anything to do with creation. That would mean that the first chapter in the Bible is all error because the entire first chapter deals with the creation of the world. Genesis 2:2, “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” Notice that the verse specifies that God’s work had ended. He was finished with the creation. Remember what I said about the value of God’s word (Bible). Through His word God has revealed to us what no man could. Second, when dealing with this thought of evolution, if we are okay with this it would say we agree that God is not sovereign. If God simply left things to chance there would be no difference between an atheists point of view and someone who believes in this thought of theistic evolution. This thought would take us away from the truths of who God is. He very much cares about every detail in this world. From the creation of the world all the way to the creation of man and even to the day to day dealings that we have now. To take away the fact that God had nothing to do with creation puts Him on an even playing field with every other man, woman, or child. However, we know that this is not the case. We know that God is all powerful (omnipotent) and that He alone is the creator of the world. Psalm 115:3, “But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.” This verse is very clear and helps us to know that God is in complete control. Whatsoever pleases God is what He does. And it pleased Him to create all things. It wasn’t by chance that all came to be. It is because an all powerful sovereign God designed it from scratch. The thought of materialism is yet another thought as to how the world came to be. This thought is one that tries to find a naturalistic and physical explanation for the existence of the universe. Anytime that we try to explain away the power of God it means that He will have to be removed from the picture. Again, it is God that is responsible for the creation of the world. Isaiah 45:18, “For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.” It is very interesting to me that when miraculous things take place people want to give credit to happenstance, coincidence, and probability but not God. Materialism’s objective is to prove that the universe is matter and its without any spiritual and intellectual existence. This is in total contradiction to who God is. God is a spirit and His intellect is what created all that we see. God is all knowing (omniscience). 1st Corinthians 3:20, “And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.” The truth of the matter is that there are so many different types of thoughts and philosophies as to how all that we see and know has come to be. These few thoughts as to how the world came to be are just that, thoughts. There are many more thoughts and there will continue to be many more. As long as the world continues to turn and the Lord Jesus has yet to come back, more and more ideas will continue to arise as to how the world started. All theories will come to the same conclusion, it wasn’t God. They will continue to try and wow us with their intellect when in reality the answer is right in front of us. God is the creator. In all that man has come up with we can find error but not with God. With God He has given us a step by step recipe that He followed when He created all. We don’t have to wonder where stars, animals, or even man came from. Its all spelled out for us in Genesis 1:1-31. Let us stop searching and start believing in what God has already told us. When I was a child I remember my mom sending me down stairs to find canned goods for dinner. As I went downstairs and into the pantry I would begin my quest to find all that asked. So many times I would be unable to find what she wanted. The problem, I looked so hard that I would look beyond the items that she wanted. My mom would tell me right where the items were but I still didn’t see them. I decided to look beyond where she wanted me to look and when I did this I missed the items. The same is true with God, He has made it very clear where to look for the truth, His word. However, we have looked beyond the area that He has instructed us to look and in doing so we looked right past the truth of creation. Focus on the truths of the Bible. Its God’s word and we don’t have to look any further. We are making things more difficult on ourselves by coming up with theories. No one was there in the beginning other then God so lets believe what He says instead of someone else. |
