Memorizing Scripture PDF Print E-mail

Key Verse:

Psalm 119:11 says, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

One of the greatest fears that Christians have is memorizing Scripture. Trust me I know. I can not tell you how many times that people have come to and asked me to help with the problems that they are going through and upon completion of our conversation I tell them that they should find a verse pertaining to their situation and memorize it. Of course their first response is, "I can't memorize things!" Before we look into some helpful ways that I have found in remembering God's word, I want to show you why it is important.

As I mentioned in Reading the Bible, the word of God perfectly furnishes us with the answers to all our problems here on earth. It furnishes us through our tribulations and our temptations. No matter if the problem is between you and a co-worker or your spouse. It does not matter if your problem is about sex or sexuality. Everything is in the Bible. Memorizing Scripture builds upon reading the Bible. They go hand and hand. We know that the Bible furnishes us with the answers to our problems, but we also know that we can not realistically take our Bible every where we go. What we can take is the word in our mind and our heart.

Psalm 119:11 says, "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

In order to live according to God's word we must memorize His word so that we do not sin against Him. In order to handle the problems of this life in a Christ like way we must know how He would handle it. And the way we do that is to make His word a part of your life by memorization. If you have a problem with anger, find what the word of God says about controlling your anger and memorize it. And as you begin to go down that vicious path of anger, in order to please God and not sin, begin recite the verse and watch what happens.

How do I memorize Scripture? In my practice, I have found the easiest way is to take a small card and write the Scripture address and the entire verse on it. I then put it in my pocket so that throughout the day as I am walking (or things get slow at work) I pull it out and recite it. Remember, it may not come to you right away but don't give up! You need to ask yourself, How important is it that I memorize God's word? Or another way to ask that question is, How much do I want to live the way that God wants me to? If you can memorize your house address and phone number then surely you can memorize the one thing in this world that helps you through, God's Holy Word.

There are many books or articles out there on ways to memorize Scripture. Some people write the scripture down over and over. Some people repeat it as a rhyme or poem, other people even sing Scripture to remember it! Any way you choose is fine as long as God's Word is sticking in your mind. When you hide God's Word in your heart that is something no one can ever take from you. Whatever you choose, just keep focused on the Lord and ask Him to help you in your time of memorizing. If you truly desire to learn God's Word, you will see that He will help you to understand and remember.
