This is a page of words that are often used when describing particular studies. As you look over this list you will notice that they all end with “logy.” This a combining form which means field of scientific study or discipline. In other words, when you see a word that ends in “logy” it means that there is a study of something.


Angelology - the study of angels

Astrology - the study that assumes and attempts to interpret the influence of the stars on human affairs

Christology - theological understanding of the nature, person, and acts of Christ.

Cosmology - the study of the origin and structure of the universe

Demonology - the study of demons

Deontology - the study of ethics through moral obligation and right action

Ecclesiology - the study of church doctrine

Eschatology - the study of the end times including the return of Christ and the matters that follow such as rapture and tribulation

Hamartiology - the study of sin

Ontology - the study of the nature of existence

Pneumatology - the study of the Holy Spirit, His attributes, and His relation to the Father and Son

Soteriology - the study of salvation

Teleology - the study of final causes

Theology - the study of God’s attributes, who He is and what He does.

Typology - the study of a type which is symbolic of Christ such as Adam (Romans 5:14) and the Passover (1st Corinthians 5:7)
