Sharing Our Faith PDF Print E-mail
Sharing our faith is one of those things that most of the time we really just do not know how to do. And if we do think that we know how, usually it is because of what you have been told rather than examining the scriptures. There are numerous ways to share our faith and in another page we will examine how to share our faith. However our objective in this writing is to examine why we know that regardless of how we do it we know that we must do it. It is not an option.

Sharing our faith is a way to say the dreaded word "evangelism". While the word evangelism is never actually mentioned in the Bible the action is. Evangelism is defined as proclaiming the gospel to those who have neither received it or heard it. Evangelism is not limited to a certain group or class of people. It is not just for the handsome or the pretty but it is to be proclaimed to all, regardless. When we look at what is referred to as the "great commission" we see that Jesus commands us to share our faith. That is why it is referred to as the "great commission" and not the great recommendation.

Matthew 28:19-20 states, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world."

When we look at this word for word we will find right off the cuff Jesus says, "Go". This is a command that indicates to us that we must move. We must be obedient to God and begin to move out of our comfort zone, beyond our desk at work, and outside of the four walls of the church. Jesus doesn't stop there, He goes on to say, "teach all nations". This shows us that we need not leave anyone out. We need to tell everyone even if it means going into places that may not be receptive to what we are teaching. Regardless of whether we are at the work place and we have an atheist at the next desk over or we go into the middle east. Again, we must be obedient and teach all nations. America, Mexico, or Russia, not matter because we must listen to what God commands. And this leads us into the next area, teaching. What do we teach? We go and teach all nations what Jesus has taught us-to observe, the commandments or teachings of Christ. Now before I give you the commands let me define it for you so that you don't get confused. A commandment is a rule imposed by authority. In short the rules have been set for us by Christ the authority. Let me give you some rules or commandments from Christ.

Jesus himself tells us in John 14:6,

"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me".

So the command, or rule, that Jesus sets is that He is the way. Notice that Jesus doesn't say that He is one of many different ways but rather THE way. He tells us that He is the truth. There is absolutely nothing other then truth in Him. As matter of fact Jesus came that He would bear witness of the truth (John 18:37). Jesus is all about truth. And finally Jesus is the life. Without out the life of Jesus where would we be? It is because of His life that we are able to get to the Father. It is because of Jesus that we are able to obtain eternal life. How about eternal life lets talk about that a little. What is the rule or command on eternal life. Now if we get out there in this world, people may desire to know why you can be certain of this eternal security. You can point them to the book of John 6:47,

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life"

This is a present tense promise, or rule, that explains to us that if we believe, we have eternal life. The requirement is believing on Christ and the promise is eternal life.

When we look through out the Bible we see these commands that Christ had set for us as believers to share with the world. The question was asked what do we teach? The answer, His commands. The rules of who Christ is. The rule where Jesus tells us that he didn't come to condemn the world but to save it. Throughout the scripture we see the teaching of God's commands by the apostles and disciples. When we as believers have gone to seminars and classes regarding evangelism where do think the instructors have come up with the scriptures? Remember that God's word is inspired ( II Timothy 3:16). That means God told the writer of each book exactly what to write. That being said we understand God to be perfect in every way which tells us that His word, the Bible, is also perfect in every way. Let me give you some examples of rules that were inspired by God written to the people. Paul wrote in the book of Romans 10:9+10,

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Paul also wrote in the book of Acts 4:12,

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

The list continues on and on.

As we look throughout the Bible we see the rules given for life everlasting, forgiveness, hope, love, grace (giving us what we do not deserve, everlasting life), and mercy (with holding what we deserve, eternal damnation). These are the commands that require us to teach all nations exactly as Christ instructed. So go out into the world and hold true to what Christ said, "I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Be courageous for Christ but more importantly be obedient and teach people about who Christ is and what He did.
