To Walk a Worthy Walk PDF Print E-mail

Many times in this walk with the Lord, we find ourselves stuck in the thought that it is all about us. Sure, we do not come right out and say it but when you get down to the nitty gritty we do think and live like this. The fact that we have been saved is for God’s good pleasure. We have to remember that God does what He wants when He wants and how He wants. It is all about God.

Take for example Romans 9:15,
“For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” In this verse we see that God has mercy and compassion on whom He will. Realizing God’s call for us, through salvation, we now can truly appreciate the motivation for Paul to encourage the believers at Colosse to “walk worthy of the Lord.”

When we look at this “walk worthy of the Lord” we have to look at a few items that are involved with a worthy walk. First, in order to have a worthy walk you must be filled with the knowledge of God’s will. This is so important to understand because as I mentioned in the paragraph above, God does not save us for our own well being. He saves us for Himself. This is why Paul took time to tell the believers at Colosse that he was praying for them and that they “might be filled with the knowledge of his will.” You see, the desire that Paul had was that they would be filled. When we think about this descriptive word, filled, it helps us to understand that our entire being needs to be filled, not part. That means every word that is spoken, every action taken, and every thought that we have must be filled with the knowledge of God. This is true to who God is because He never calls a part of us to Himself but rather all of us.

Deuteronomy 6:5, “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”

God wants us to be filled. But the question needs to be asked, filled with what? Paul continues on to tell us that he desired for them, as well as for us here today, that they “be filled with the knowledge of his will.” The word “His” clearly identifies for us what it is that we are to focused on, God’s will. One of the greatest examples of this is the life of Jesus. In all that Jesus did we see that His focus was on God and His will. Because Jesus knew and understood the will of God He was able to stay the course and follow all that God the Father had for Him. Spreading the word, healing people, raising people from the dead, and being crucified are just a few examples of Christ’s submission to God’s will.

Paul continues on to say, “that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” The wisdom and spiritual understanding is clear to point us to God. Paul does not say earthly or worldly wisdom and understanding but instead spiritual.

Remember that 1st Corinthians 3:19 says,
“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness…”

but Proverbs 9:10,
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

You see, this is a worthy walk. When you are filled with the knowledge of God’s will. When you understand God’s purpose for your life which is to glorify Him with all of your being. Submissive to all that He desires for you. A worthy walk would be to exemplify the fruit of the Spirit. Love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. When you walk worthily you will be fruitful in all good works. To walk a worthy walk would be for you to govern your life with all of the word of God and not just the parts that make you feel good. When we walk a worthy walk we would call sin, sin. And the Bible would tell us what sin would look like such as the works of the flesh.

Galatians 5:19-21, “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like:”

In closing, a worthy walk would display the love and desire to follow God. In order to have a worthy walk we must be obedient to Matthew 16:24,

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
